Meditation for Thursday 30 April 2026
There are things we need to be mindful about when we meditate; a checklist that helps us with our practice.
- We need to find a comfortable posture. Sitting up straight is essential and it’s best to have our hands in a non-clasping position. You can also lay on the floor but be careful about falling asleep!
- When focussing on the breath be relaxed. Some people like to begin with long, deep breaths but during meditation breath normally.
- Always accept what arises without judgement. Don’t enter into a dialogue with thoughts and don’t beat yourself up by worrying about distractions. Having a blank mind is not the goal of meditation. It’s OK if thoughts intrude- just generally try to shift your focus back to the breath.
- Practice regularly. This requires a firm commitment to prioritise meditation.
- Be patient with yourself.
- Let go of expectations. There is no right or wrong way the important thing is that you have taken time to invest in the practice. A meditation filled with rising thoughts and a wandering mind is still a meditation and still beneficial.
- Think of meditation as not just another activity but as a particular approach to life.
- Twenty minutes is an ideal practice time, but five minutes is better than not at all.
- Be clear about your intention for meditating. For many people it is a religious activity and see meditation in the context of prayer. Others are seeking less stress, etc. Stopping to be consciously calm does not come easily to everyone, but it will bring you great benefit and will benefit others.
