CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS. APOLOGIES FOR INCONVENIENCE
Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection (1614-91) was a Carmelite laybrother and mystic. He was a soldier as a young man and later a hermit, before joining the Discalced Carmelites in Paris in 1649. He was the community cook and sandal maker for this large community of about a hundred friars. Lawrence stresses that the heart of prayer is simply love, and that few words are needed to keep the mind focussed on the presence and love of God. A brief aspiration can be used frequently throughout the day as a way of keeping God in mind. Out of his apparently ordinary life lived in profound holiness came a brief spiritual classic which has enchanted both Catholics and Protestants for three centuries, The Practice of the Presence of God. Lawrence was not a writer and his spiritual way is known to us from conversations that were written down by people who sought his guidance, and a few brief letters. His deceptively simple teaching is to keep humbly and trustfully focused on God.
About the facilitator: Paul Chandler is an Australian Carmelite who studied theology in Rome and medieval spirituality in Toronto. He taught church history for 20 years in Melbourne and since 2010 has been spiritual director at Holy Spirit Seminary in Brisbane.
