17 February Susan Frykberg on Boethius and Music

Boethius’s De Institutione Musica (6th Century CE), was the most widely read musical treatise of the Middle Ages. It translated Greek musical ideas into Latin and described harmonic ratios (the basis of both sound and music), as a kind of unified field theory which connected the workings of the cosmos, earth, body, soul and music. Boethius’s  ideas were extremely influential even up to the 17th  century and references to his thought can be found in the literary works of Chaucer, Dryden and Shakespeare. The idea of ‘music of the spheres’ comes from Boethius,  as does the  notion that music is the glue that holds body and soul together. This spiritual reading group presents ideas, text, sound and images from De Institutione Musica as well as literary texts that refer to it.

Please book for the February group using the form below so you can receive the zoom link and the pre-reading material, and please pay via bank transfer.
