This session will look at the journey of John of the Cross that led him to the Carmelites where he would be an inspiring light in the darkness for all who journeyed in the spiritual pursuit of the Beloved. The main focus will on his love for the beauty of nature from which he derived inspiration for his poetry. Reference is made to The Song of Solomon where he found that a tenderness was met for his Beloved and which led him to desire union with the Beloved. His spiritual friendship with St Teresa of Avila was formative in his desire for the Carmelites to return to a stricter observance of the Rule, which they both pursued in a different but unified way.
