We will read and discuss some of Cavafy’s best-known poems: ‘Ithaka’, ‘The God Abandons Antony’, and ‘Waiting for the Barbarians.’
Greek poet Constantinos P. Cavafy was one of the greatest literary figures of the 20th Century. Like Eliot, Joyce and Yeats he addressed a mythologised city, Alexandria, to explore the dimensions of the human condition. His works move in time and space embracing both the sensual inspiration of Greek antiquity and the Orthodox splendour of Imperial Byzantium, eventually taking in the whole of Greek civilization and culture over many centuries.
