Meditation for Thursday 4 December 2025
For many of us who live busy lives in an urban environment finding silence is problematic. The silence that comes when we are sitting still in meditation is one way to deal with the hurley burley and hustle and bustle of everyday living; it offers us a chance to achieve inner stillness and calm.
The silence of meditation is an underutilised resource for growth, inspiration and healing, a sanctuary where our minds can unwind, our thoughts breathe, and our souls reconnect with the origin of our existence.
Most spiritual and philosophical traditions place great value in silence as a means to achieving inner peace and wisdom. Most of us have neither the time nor inclination to engage in retreats, workshops and other worthwhile activities that foster silence, but we can build a regular meditation practice into our daily regime.
Our meditation in silence is a gateway to our inner selves and to a profound reality, often called God, the Ground of our Being or Life Force, which exists beyond our usual perceptions.
Meditation in silence has been shown to have physical and psychological effects that contribute to our well-being. As a result, it is now practiced in workplaces, in education and in psychotherapy.
Complimenting our formal silent meditation practice with mindfulness moments and nature walks is a way to cement silence firmly into our day-to-day living.
Silence is a gift, a special gift in our noisy world of traffic, tweets, alerts, emails, and chatter.
Silence in meditation is more than the absence of noise, it is a pathway to being our true self, to spiritual growth.
