Meditation for Thursday 30 October 2025
Meditation is a healing practice that when combined with those day-to-day mindfulness practices helps us to be ‘real.’ Many of us have a meditation practice that includes other practices such as formal prayer, motivational and inspirational aspirations, listening to music, communing with nature, etc…so the list goes on. One practice that might prove helpful concerns how we speak. I found it in a book by Jeffrey Miller….
- Start the day with a prayer/aspiration that reaffirms an intention always to speak with compassion and love. E.g. “ May this day of right speech bring gentle blessings to those around me; may the blessings extend throughout the world.”
- Centre and collect oneself each time I speak being mindful of my words.
- Find ways to keep ones words gentle, loving, accurate and positive. We strive to do this even when we are annoyed or upset.
- See if we can discover better ways to talk to others that will open up new channels of communication.
- Don’t lie and don’t use words to manipulate and control.
- Don’t gossip.
- Use our words to encourage those around us.
- Cultivate a way of speaking that is simple and spare.
- Use our words to express gentleness and kindness.
- Think about the people in your life who have suffered losses. Next time you meet express your empathy and sympathy.
- Take the time to express support for someone else’s work or personal project.
In almost all spiritual traditions and ancient practices including yoga, training in morality is considered a precursor to meditation practice. At the same time, it’s understood that meditation can strengthen our capacity to act in an ethical manner.
