Meditation for Thursday 24th July 2025

Russian philosopher P.D. Ouspensky* wrote “In order to do, it is necessary to be.” But what does to be mean?

“To be” means to be present, the very thing we try to achieve in meditation.

Of course, it has wider connotations such as being mindfully present to others by not being distracted by other things.

We seek to be in the present, to be in the here and now by concentrating on the breath as a technique to focus our attention. Some meditators like to take deep breaths before their practice to sharpen their focus before gently relaxing into the rhythm of regular breathing.

Smiling is good. Some meditators like to smile as this can trigger endorphins that can lift one’s mood and just like gratitude, even little smiles can lead to bigger smiles.

When we focus less on doing and more on being, our lives improve.

We live in the present being mindful that every breath is sacred and every moment divine.
