Meditation for Thursday 19th June 2025
In some places there is a growing realisation that a workplace is lacking when it ignores the wisdom and creativity that arises from contemplation. As Western societies have generally favoured the person of action over the person of contemplation this thinking is somewhat ground-breaking.
Contemplation as expressed through our meditation practice is a springboard for action.
We insist that the final goal is not the contemplative enjoyment of meditation but rather as we return from the delight of silence we are motivated to the loving service of our neighbour. In this way meditation becomes a catalyst for social change.
We are quite good at itemising and categorising our lives, separating our contemplation from the active; this is incomprehensible to the person who knows that ‘turning-inward’ goes hand-in-hand with communal responsibility. No aspect of life can be compartmentalised or isolated because every facet of our life and character is sacred and interconnected.
It is true that many people who come to meditation are looking for a technique to help them relax, a few have serious illnesses and others are confused about their religious beliefs. Some are believers and others agnostic or atheist.
The motivation and belief conviction are inconsequential as ultimately a faithful practitioner will become conscious that meditation and its external manifestation mindfulness constitute the hub of a wheel around which circle various components that constitute our lives, including compassionate outreach and advocacy.
So now let us seek to remain in the present moment as we meditate conscious that we may well play some small part in creating a more peaceful world….
