Meditation for Thursday 14th November 2024

This week we continue to look at how Mahatma Gandhi, the father modern India encouraged the practice of meditation in his own life as well as others…

Gandhi said that meditation helps us take care of the present moment….

“I do not want to foresee the future. I am concerned with taking care of the present. God has given me no control over the moment following.”

When we are in the present moment we don’t worry about the next moment that we can’t control anyway. Our resistance to action usually comes from imagining negative future consequences. So it becomes easier to both take action and to keep our focus on the moment.

Gandhi reminded us that everyone is human…

I claim to be a simple individual liable to err like any other fellow mortal. It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”

It’s important that we remember that we are all human and prone to make mistakes. Meditation helps us to see with clarity where we go wrong and what we can learn from our mistakes.

Gandhi reminded us that meditation when practiced faithfully, when it becomes a commitment in our life will give us persistence…..

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, and then they fight you, then you win.”

Be persistent. In time that inner voice that resists meditation will fade and fall away. We must find our way to meditate, the way we really like and then we’ll find the inner motivation to keep going, going, going.

So now in silence and in awareness let us meditate in the present moment…..
