Meditation for Thursday 12th June 2025
After practicing a daily meditation routine for a while we begin to notice that our clarity and insight are sharpened as it helps us to stabilise the mind and gives us space to let go, fall silent, and gradually to feel comfortable with life. It doesn’t necessarily provide us with answers, in fact sometimes it raises more questions than answers, but we are content. This is the great benefit of regular practice, preferably twice daily for a period of about 20 minutes morning and evening.
For many people, this commitment of time is difficult so we do what we can. Often this means practicing mindfulness during the greater part of the day as we go about our day-to-day activities. It’s simple but effective as it centres us as we pay attention to the routines of living. e.g. Brushing teeth; combing hair; eating; walking, etc.
We bring our attention fully to what we are doing.
We’ll be distracted by a commentary in our head that might run something like this…”Oh my goodness, this is really stupid, this is weird; why am I brushing my teeth and having to intently think about brushing my teeth?”
When we give way to such commentary, we are no longer mindful.
Mindfulness and meditation are being fully aware of being in the present moment without any commentary.
It’s often said that we give only half our attention to the things we do. We believe we are doing things wholeheartedly when in fact we are probably thinking about a hundred different things at the same time. We’re not usually conscious of this. We’re like the person who thinks she is walking the dog but ends up following the dog wherever it leads her.
And now let us meditate reminding ourselves as we dwell in the present that we not only meditate for ourselves but for the benefit of others.
