Paul will reflect on the aspect of song through Mary’s encounter with God as prayer in the scripture mainly the Magnificat. Through the liturgical prayer of the Church, it invites us, through Jesus, to see the Holy Spirit in the rare expression of the woman from whose flesh our Saviour took his own.

Magnificat is Mary in her own words. It inspires reflection and imitation of the scriptures by presenting Mary as a gift and invitation, a mother of prayer and listening for all. Mary’s joyful response to the revelation of the Incarnation, recorded in Luke’s Gospel, is the heartbeat of the liturgical and devotional life of the Church.

This session leads participants to recognise Mary as a person who modeled a deep life of contemplation and wisdom. We are invited to open the dimensions of our prayer in a Marial and faithful way as listeners of God’s word. We come to see how Mary influences our prayer life as a mother, as the first disciple and as part of the communion of saints.

About the facilitator:
I come from the beautiful Manus Island, north of Papua New Guinea. I joined the Carmelites in 2000 and was solemnly professed in 2005 and ordained at the end of that year. I love liturgy and am passionate about music in my 16 years as an ordained Carmelite. As a chaplain to Whitefriars College it is a joy to experience a new ministry, coming into a big community of students and teachers who share the same ethos and living the Carmelite charism. I enjoy being involved in the various liturgies and college events. It is a peaceful environment. Now as the full-time chaplain with the Religious Education team, I feel I am putting my gift of liturgy into practice and gaining new experiences. Music is a vital part of the liturgy that makes my priestly ministry vibrant and prayerful.
