Hope you can join us for this session via zoom.(Scroll down for zoom link) This presentation by Brian Harold will include a reading of some of Newman’s poems and some discussion of two of his less often mentioned writings – one on “Laity” and the other an oratory paper which includes the quotation:
“If we would aim at perfection, we must perform well the duties of the day. I do not know anything more difficult, more sobering, so strengthening than the constant aim to go through the ordinary day’s work well.”

John Henry Newman (1801 – 1890) was an English convert to Catholicism, later made a Cardinal. His motto when he became (Roman) Catholic was Cor ad Cor Loquitor. Heart Speaks to Heart. He is the first English person born since the 17th century to be canonised as a saint.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that there is no saint – indeed any historical figure – we know so much about. Thousands (literally) of his letters to friends, relatives, the newspapers, are available to read. He was a very ‘public figure’ virtually from his early days at Oxford.
His acclaimed writings were the Anglican Tracts for the Times which had a huge influence on the remaking of the Church of England; his Grammar of Assent; and his Apologia Pro Vita Sua. He wrote ‘Pillar of the Cloud’, the poem which begins ‘Lead Kindly Light ….” later to become a popular hymn. Also ‘The long poem ‘The Dream of Gerontius’, set to music as an oratorio by Elgar.
He was a scholar, writer, poet, pastor, teacher, preacher, theologian, philosopher, superb prose writer. And that’s not all!
