Event Type

This session will look at the journey of John of the Cross that led him to the Carmelites where he would be an inspiring light in the darkness for all who journeyed in the spiritual pursuit of the Beloved. The main focus will on his love for the beauty of nature from which he derived inspiration for his poetry. Reference is made to The Song of Solomon where he found that a tenderness was met for his Beloved and which led him to desire union with the Beloved. His spiritual friendship with St Teresa of Avila was formative in his desire for the Carmelites to return to a stricter observance of the Rule, which they both pursued in a different but unified way.

About the presenter: Patricia (Pat) Greene’s life saw her work as a registered nurse, who taught in midwifery and community at several universities supported by her first degree in social sciences, then a Master’s degree in Public Health.

A major epiphany happened when in a second-hand bookstore, a 1995 edition of The Interior Castle leapt into her hands that led her on a spiritual journey that introduced her to St John of the Cross via the poem, The Dark Night. In 2001 she undertook theology studies completing a BA in theology in 2007 and a doctoral degree in 2012. Inspired to write on both Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, several manuscripts ‘Our Wilderness Quest’ based on The Night of the Senses, and the Interior Castle, ‘Take Refuge’, will be published in 2025 by the Carmelites in Oxford.

Prior to retirement in 2010 she coordinated the aged care for the Sisters of Mercy Perth. Now she lives in a retirement village and serves the parish of St Patrick’s Bunbury in Western Australia. In 2023, from a ten year association with the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, she became an oblate. Her spiritual growth is nurtured by spiritual reading, Lectio and applying Benedict’s Rule to her daily life.  Patricia (Pat) Greene. OSB Obl.
