This Conversation is a simple introduction to three major spiritual and philosophical writers who were contemporaries: Edith Stein, Etty Hillesum, and Simone Weil. All three were Jewish women who either converted or engaged actively in their own religious quest. Edith Stein became a Carmelite nun and is now canonised by the Catholic Church. Etty Hillesum lived an intense and devoted life in occupied Amsterdam; like Stein, she died in Auschwitz. Simone Weil was a brilliant French philosopher who discovered mystical tradition; she died in England in 1943. The three portraits emerge over time, as we hear of their thought through shared quotes. The Conversation will focus on three main subjects in their writing: Empathy, Love, and the Cross.

About the presenter: Philip Harvey is the Librarian at the Carmelite Library Middle Park.
