This conversation will be an introduction to the life and spirituality of Joseph Kalinowski (Saint Raphael OCD).
Born in “Poland” in 1835, forty years after Poland as a country had ceased to exist, he was caught up in the recurrent uprisings of the Polish people against the occupying forces and condemned to ten years hard labour in Siberia.
His long-held desire to enter the Carmelite Order was finally realised in his early 40’s. He writes, “It is purely this thought of penance that leads me to Carmel, and I cast aside every other thought.” (L424) How can we understand this motivation and relate to it today? He was greatly valued as a confessor and spiritual director and called “the saint” by those who knew him. What was it about him that prompted such a reputation?
