This “Carmelite Conversation” will introduce Edith Stein with a brief overview of her life and her search for ‘truth’ through philosophy. We will ponder the personal struggles involved through a reflection called “The Road to Carmel” written prior to her evacuation from Germany to Holland in December 1938. We will reflect on the meaning she gave to her own plight as a “Catholic-Jew” and the Jewish response to her thoughts. We will seek some personal learning through raising the question, “Did Edith Stein die as a Christian Martyr?” and considering the controversy surrounding her canonization.
