10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
This Carmelite Conversation will be led by Paul Cahill, the Prior Provincial of the Carmelites Australia and Timor Leste. His topic is Carlos Mester, a Dutch Carmelite Priest who has lived and worked in Brazil since 1950.
After completing advanced Biblical Studies in Jerusalem, he returned to Brazil in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council and was very prominent in supporting the development of Basic Ecclesial Communities. Within these communities of poor and oppressed farmers and other workers, Mesters particularly promoted a way of reading the Bible which placed him in the stream of Liberation Theology.
Mesters has authored or co-authored about 100 books, written numerous articles and given innumerable lectures in different parts of the world – in the service of promoting an appreciation of the Bible among common people. A number of his books have been translated into English and are available in the Carmelite Library at Middle Park.
Please put these dates in your diary. You are welcome to come along to any of these sessions, which are held in the Carmelite Library on the first Wednesday morning of each month February to December, 10.30 am – 12 midday. More details about each one will be provided closer to the date.
