Dear Meditators

This week our meditation is taken from Henry Nouwen’s book, LifeSigns. Over the last few weeks we have considered his overall theme: a possibility to move from a house of fear to a house of love, reflecting on the three vital aspects of this ministry – intimacy, fecundity/fruitfulness and joy “to show what life in the house of love looks like, and create the desire to live in it.”

This week on fecundity; described as being open to a fruitful life of change and growth.

  • “Those who remain in me with me in them, bear fruit in plenty” (John 15:5). This is a call to fecundity. It is not only our sense of homelessness, (a lack of intimacy in our lives) but also our doubts concerning our ability to give life that causes so much suffering. Much pain in the world of today is directly caused by this deep sense of worthlessness. Those that have a deep sense of their value, are in touch with the life giving qualities of their existence, through their joy; they bring forth joy, and their peace brings peace. Fear makes us sterile and withdrawn and extinguishes the desire to grow…or forces us at times into some form of ‘productivity.’
  • Yet the Spirit of God is a creative spirit, always expressing itself in new life. Some of us may be productive, some not, but we are all called to bear fruit…fruitfulness is a true quality of love. The great mystery of fecundity is that it becomes visible where we have given up our attempts to control life and take the risk to let life reveal its own inner movements. The most fruitful life ever lived is the life of Jesus, who did not cling to his divine power but became as we are. We grow from receiving and giving gifts…

Relax now in body and mind, slow your breathing, and enter your meditation, centering your prayer, your will and intention on the deeply loved value of yourself, and your ability to bring forth joy and peace. Allow yourself to hear the words “remain in me with me in you.”

Love and every blessing
